“Susannah Self (Mrs. Grose) possesses excellent vocal means, of very good volume, while her musicality and comprehension of character gives an unusual relief and dramatic importance, being complemented in excellent form with the soprano Mihai in the numerous and important scenes that they have together.”

“Perhaps next to the excellence of both it is necessary to emphasize Susannah Self, a mezzo of imposing figure and very attractive vocal means, with her amplitude of registry and effective scenic performance.”

Company: D'Oyly Carte Opera Company (Savoy Theatre) · Production: The Mikado
Role: Katisha
But there are compensations elsewhere, especially Susannah Self's superb Katisha. Not only can she really sing, but she defuses the old Gilbertian joke at the expense of middle-aged women by treating the Mikado's daughter as a tragically lonely figure who, in the course of "Hearts do not break" turns into a bald prima donna. The pay-off comes, however when Self totally reinvents herself for the climax, enthusiastically brandishing her right elbow and suggesting that Ko-Ko may have got the best marital deal.
Michael Billington, The Guardian, 2002

Susannah Self's rampantly severe but paradoxically sympathetic Katisha is as good as you'll find.
